How to use this CD:
First, you may wish to familiarize yourself with the layout of the CD. The layout is similar to your computer files or an Internet website. You may browse through folders and pages to find the document you want, and then click on it to open that file. The scanned pages of the Service Bulletins are saved in a format called an Adobe PDF. This is a Portable Document Format. It is a widely used format, and is very stable and reliable. The Computer Program used to "read" PDF files is called Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most computers already have some version of this program loaded on them. If you do, the PDF files contained herein will launch automatically- and the documents will open. If you do NOT have Acrobat Reader on your computer, the latest version is included on this CD. All you need do is click on the "Install Acrobat Reader" Tab on the Contents Page and follow the instructions.
Intro: This is the CD-default page. It loads when the CD is inserted into the disk drive. This page explains how the project started and the purpose of the CD.
Contents: The column to the left is the Navigation Pane. It lets you choose what folders to browse on the CD. You may choose to open the Service Bulletin Index List- so that you can browse topics like "brakes" or "transmission" within a particular time frame - to find the Service Bulletin Number that contains that information. OR, you may go directly to the Service Bulletin File List- and browse them by number and date. These choices are further described below.
Service Bulletin Index List: In order to make the Service Bulletins more user-friendly, Studebaker provided Dealers with indexes every so often. These Indexes- contain an alphabetical list of the Bulletin's Contents (Reference), the Bulletin Number (Bul. No.), and the Page Number (Page No.) where that information can be found. It also lists the Studebaker Model- the information is specific to. For example- The Cumulative Index for Bulletins 193-266 (Dated Sept 1947-Aug 1952) Provides us with the following chart:

Browsing the index, we can find information on the Rear Bearing Oil Seal for models 6G-8G and 15A-16A, is located in Service Bulletin #216, Page #2. Armed with this information, we can then browse the Service Bulletin File List for Service Bulletin #216. Clicking on the file, that Bulletin will be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may choose to view the information on your monitor, or print it so you have a hard-copy handy to take with you.
Searching the Indexes in Adobe Acrobat: When the indexes were created, we wanted them to be searchable- so one could find the information a bit more easily. Only the Index files of this project can be searched- NOT the Service Bulletin files themselves. To use the search feature:
1) Open the desired Service Bulletin Index in Adobe Acrobat
2) Click the EDIT tab in the upper left- and scroll through the drop-down list. Choose FIND- a FIND WHAT dialog box will open.
*** OR- look on the upper toolbar for what looks like a pair of binoculars- this will also open the FIND WHAT dialog box.
3) Fill in the text box with the TOPIC or GENERAL DESCRIPTION of what you are looking for- such as brake, wheel bearing, oil seal, etc... It pays to be vague- with more returns. If you get too specific, some pertinent items may be skipped. A query such as - emergency brake handle- will yield fewer results than brake or handle - will on their own. You may also search by MODEL- just type in 2R, or 14G, or other model numbers.
4) The search feature will jump right to the 1st instance of your search within the document- If that doesn't get you the information needed, hit the FIND AGAIN button- and it will jump to the next return. You can quickly browse through the entire document.
Service Bulletin File List: This is the folder where the PDF file for each Service Bulletin is located. They are arranged in order by the Bulletin Number and Date they were released to Studebaker Dealers. Each filename includes the Service Bulletin Number, and release Date in the title- so that you may use several methods to find the Bulletin you need. You may browse them for a specific number, or choose to view Bulletins from a specific time period. For example: The LINK below Shows that Service Bulletin #216 was released in February of 1949. All you have to do to access that file- is to click on the link.
